Reflexology vs Massage: What's the Difference?

"Should I book reflexology or a massage?" It's one of the questions Roxanne hears most often at Hidden Leaf Holistic Therapies — and the honest answer is: it depends what your body needs right now. Here's a clear look at how the two differ, so you can choose with confidence.
What is massage?
Massage works directly on muscles across the body — back, shoulders, legs, wherever tension has built up. Using varying pressure and technique, it eases tight muscles, improves circulation, and helps the whole body physically relax. It's the treatment most people picture when they think "massage," and it's wonderfully effective for muscular tension, stiffness, and general stress relief.
What is reflexology?
Reflexology is different in an important way: it's worked entirely through the feet (sometimes hands), using pressure applied to specific points that correspond to different areas and systems of the body. Rather than working the muscles directly, reflexology aims to encourage balance and relaxation throughout the whole body via these reflex points.
It's a gentler, more precise practice, often used to support overall wellbeing, relaxation, and the body's own natural balance — not just physical tension.
Key differences at a glance
Where it's worked: massage covers the muscles directly; reflexology focuses on the feet. What it targets: massage eases specific muscular tension; reflexology aims to support the whole body via reflex points. How it feels: massage can range from gentle to firm depending on your needs; reflexology is typically a calmer, more meditative experience. Clothing: massage usually requires you to undress to your comfort level; reflexology is done fully clothed, working only on bare feet.
Which should you choose?
If you have specific muscular tension — a tight back, sore shoulders, stiff legs — massage is usually the better starting point. If you're looking for deep relaxation, general wellbeing support, or simply prefer a gentler, more restorative session, reflexology is a lovely choice.
Many clients alternate between the two, or ask Roxanne's advice during a chat before booking. As a member of the Association of Beauty Therapy & Cosmetology (ABT) with specialist training alongside her 17 years of experience, she's always happy to help you choose the right treatment for how you're feeling.
